I’m sure you’ve seen an art piece before, but have you ever truly experienced one? The company Meow Wolf offers an exciting and immersive art experience, showcasing the works of hundreds of artists to create a mesmerizing environment for exploration and interaction. Recently, our third-year art classes had the incredible opportunity to visit one of these interactive art installations in person on May 14, providing a thrilling and vibrant experience for all attendees.
The art field trip took place at Meow Wolf’s Radio Wave installation in Houston, Texas, one of the many themed experiences the company offers. Other notable art attractions include the House of Eternal Return and Omega Mart. These expansive museums are renowned for their creative theming, hidden areas, and interactive puzzles throughout the exhibits.
So, what was it all like? “It was this neon place with mysteries. I liked that everything there was interactive; it wasn’t just a show,” said 8th grader Evie Ventura. She also appreciated the amount of effort put into it. “Every room had a different theme, but it all stayed underneath the same theme: radio and mystery,” said Ventura. She expresses her desire to go again.
Art teacher Ms. Waguespack also commented on the experience. “Students were able to freely explore art differently. I only wish we had more time there…Meow Wolf is known for their little surprise areas and secret doors and things inside a filing cabinet, so it was fun seeing all those and finding them.” Like Ventura, she also deeply appreciated the work that went into such an experience. “You realize how much work goes into creating and curating not only the individual rooms but enhancing a whole story behind it,” said Waguespack.
Fellow art teacher Ms. Pratt shared similar sentiments about the field trip. “Meow Wolf is a collective, experimental art installation that a lot of different artists contribute to to create this other dimension, and there’s usually a story that you can follow, like a mystery that you can solve, and as you look around, you can find clues…I like how many artists they get involved with. Because they employ a lot of artists,” said Pratt. Pratt also emphasized how much she enjoyed the secret areas.
If you enjoy colorful, fun, quirky, and interactive experiences, Meow Wolf is the perfect destination. It’s a place where you can explore freely and engage with art, experiencing it in a completely new way. The dedication of each artist to these installations is impressive, and I’m excited to see what they will create next. It offers a fresh and thrilling perspective on art that I highly recommend.
