Homecoming is a beloved event for any school, it builds community, school spirit and pride as well as showcasing band, cheer, dance, and football teams. On Tuesday, the Lively Falcons put up a strong fight but lost against Paredes MS in our own Homecoming game. The band and cheerleaders were boosting morale, the Dazzlers and Royal Blues each had a fantastic halftime performance, and the Lively football team gave the game their absolute best shot.
Before the game, spirits were high, and the football team was ready to go. “I’m feeling pretty confident, but also nervous.” said Major Galvez, a 7th grade player. Liam Bodle, the wide receiver for 8th grade said that they “definitely have a better team than last year.”
Despite the confidence and excitement both teams had, Lively lost the 7th grade game 20-8 and the 8th grade game 49-0. However, one 7th grader, Owen Walsh, scored an incredible touchdown in the 4th quarter.
One major highlight of the games was the halftime performances, by the Dazzlers Elite and the Royal Blues JV teams. Elite danced for the 8th grade game and JV danced for 7th grade. I spoke with Dot McColgin, the 1st lieutenant for the Dazzlers, she told me that dancing at Homecoming was “a very fun experience” even though their music got cut out. She also said that she “loved the atmosphere” of the game.
Up in the stands, the Lively Falcon Band played our fight song, Funky Town and more. “I felt very honored, I had a very good time” said Aly Aleman-Chapa, an 8th grade band student, when asked how it felt to play at the game. Another band student, Lucy Foster said that she “loved seeing the cheerleaders perform.”
Throughout the whole game, our fantastic cheer squad was out on the field supporting our team. 8th grade cheerleader, Yanellis Torres said that cheering at the game felt “really great” and that “even though we didn’t win, it’s not about winning, it’s about cheering on our team.”
Overall, even though Lively lost the game, everyone still did a fantastic job. “The game was rough, but I think we can work hard and improve” said Bodle after the game. No matter who I talked to, (fans, staff, players, etc.) everyone said in their own way that win or lose, homecoming is about building community, school spirit and showing support for all our remarkable programs.
