On May 16, 2025, Dr. Perez, Mr. Nava, and Ms. Carbajal took some students to the Alliance of Texas History Conference at Texas State University. The students had the opportunity to attend sessions on various topics in the morning.
One of these sessions was South Texas and the Global Landscape: Disease, Reproductive Rights, and Education in 20th Century Laredo. 8th grader Eliza Burkhart attended this session. She said, “It was really cool, I got to see a bunch of qualified professionals speak on a topic they know a lot about.” Eliza’s favorite part of the day was seeing the panelist speaking about abortion, she said, “She was really interesting.”
Another session students attended was Texas Police Memorials. 8th grader Miles Severson said his favorite part was, “hearing other people’s opinions and new information on the topic.”
8th grader Angelica Perez attended a different session, Radical Mexican Labor Politics: Transnational Roots and Development of a Mexican Class Consciousness in Texas. She said, “The most interesting part was when the second presenter told us about a woman who was running away from cops while making money.”
In addition to these incredible sessions, the students attending got the opportunity to see some of the Texas State University campus and get a tour of a little museum. Students found it to be very interesting and an incredible opportunity.
