Are you looking to try new sports?
If you are, or are trying to get into sports, there’s nothing I could recommend more than Ultimate Frisbee. In mine and many others’ experience it is a very welcoming sport. I had many people help and support me while learning and you can too.
So you may be wondering what exactly is Ultimate Frisbee?
If I could sum it up, it’s a competitive and active team sport. Some of our students at Lively got to experience this sport last year and here’s what they had to say about it.
“So the first thing is overall it was a really fun thing to do. I got to learn a sport that is very interesting. I was surprised to find out it was very similar to soccer so that helped me get used to it. Another thing about it is it’s a team sport so it really helps build teamwork with your peers. If it were to come back this year, I would expect there to be a lot more kids because it’s a very fun club to do. My biggest expectation for it if it were to come back this year would be that it is as well coached, instructed, and fun as last year,” said 8th grader Evan Kirk
It was brought to the Lively campus last year with a partnership between Lively and TUSC (Texas Ultimate Summer Camp). If you aren’t familiar with TUSC, it is an organization that puts together most of the youth ultimate events in Texas/Austin and teaches children how to play.
“What I love about ultimate frisbee – and especially ultimate at the youth level – is the combination of competition and athleticism with character and integrity. Because kids are the officials, it means that all players get to know their opponents, and have to work together to keep the game moving. Even in the most competitive games, players talk to each other and treat each other with respect. That element makes it a really fun sport to play, and a great way to make friends on your own team and across the city,” said Coach Kepner, a leader of TUSC.
Full disclosure, I attended the club last year and have gone to most of the TUSC events. Every year I go to the camp they have in summer, along with spring and fall leagues. I have made many friends and learned so much about frisbee. I think that having the club back at school would be great. If there are any teachers who would like to learn more about the club or be a sponsor please let me know. I can be reached through the Falcon Cry.
