Georgia’s Mercedes Benz Stadium, an indoor multi-purpose stadium. This was the first national championship game of the 12-team College Football Playoff era.
At half-time the game had a score of 21 – 7, this looked very one sided, and by the beginning of the third quarter the Buckeyes had increased the lead to 31 – 7. For many the game was over, especially with little time for the Fighting Irish to make such a large comeback. Even though the Fighting Irish had little time they made big plays one after another on defense and offense. Scoring, and stopping the Buckeyes from sealing the game. Alas, it was too late as the Buckeyes were crowned champions for the first time in 10 years. The game ended with a final score of 34 – 23 after beating many top teams, including a team in close proximity.
The Texas Longhorns are who I’m speaking about, they made it to the Semi-finals of the playoffs the past two years. Last year they lost a game against Washington and this year faced
Ohio State in the Semifinals. The play-offs changed in between these two past seasons with the new 12 team playoffs being debuted this past season. Texas was on their way to face Ohio
State, beat Clemson, and Arizona State. In the game against Ohio State they lost, which officially made the championship between Ohio State, and Notre Dame.
Actually, Ohio State had lost their final game of the regular season before the playoffs against what’s one of the biggest college rivalry games referred to as “The Game.” The Buckeyes
would end up winning each game onwards even after the embarrassing defeat before the playoffs. They would go on to go challenge Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame in the
National Championship. Ohio State went on and won all these games by two scores or more. Christopher Lamon, a teacher assistant here at Lively, had lots to say about this game. “It was a good
game, Notre Dame played well. I liked how they expanded the college football playoffs to include more teams. That allowed Ohio State to get in this year. But it made it more interesting
because Ohio State was the lower rank. And that one of the lowest ranked teams in the tournament this year won the whole thing,” said Lamon. Lamon’s perspective about the outcome before the game started was that, “Honestly, I wasn’t too sure because Notre Dame had a really good team and we were initially the underdog, we had lost two games this season to some pretty good teams and so I didn’t really expect us to go that far, but once halftime rolled around, my opinion had changed and I was confident that we were gonna win.” Lastly, the day after the game, “I showed up the next day to school in Ohio State colors,” said Lamon.
