This year’s Super Bowl halftime show was performed by none other than the sensational Kendrick Lamar, with special guest SZA. This year’s Super Bowl half-time show will be epic. I will be answering who Kendrick Lamar is and why he was chosen and performing including SZA. As well what happened during the show for everyone who didn’t see it.
Kendrick Lamar is a 37 year old man who was born in Compton, California. He is a rapper who was famous for multiple songs but most prominently an amazing song called “Not like Us.” This song has gone viral and even helped Kendrick win 5 Grammys from 1 song! The reason why Kendrick was chosen to perform the Halftime was due to Kendrick’s overall performances over the many years he has played he has been consistent with his songs and records. Everyone who listens to him is in love with his music. Critics, his fans and his peers have said so. SZA, a 35 year old woman who is a neo soul singer, which means she doesn’t just just sing one type of music, she has a variety of music she creates. The reason she was chosen to be the Super Bowl special is because she has also won some Grammys, been consistent, and because she was on one of Kendrick’s famous songs called “Luther.” This was a great song by both artists and was probably one of the main reasons why she was nominated as a Super Bowl halftime special guest.
The Half-time show started off with Lamar, with a teaser from an unreleased song, which fans have tentatively dubbed “Bodies,” before transitioning into “Squabble up.” With Backup dancers dressed in different colors red, white and blue. Next he transitions into the song “Humble.” The next act Kendrick goes into a “X” shaped Room with Back up dancers dressed in fluffy white coats while Kendrick sang “DNA, Euphoria, Man at the Garden, and Peekaboo” Until The mystery special guest SZA comes laying on the stage singing “Luther” Then transitioned into “All the stars”. After a while and a couple of songs, the famous song “Not like us” was playing bits and pieces from the song. Eventually Kendrick started to play it and everyone went wild. He played the song however some of the song was cut out for inappropriate language. After that the halftime was over. With drones in the dark spelling “Game Over.”
I believe that this was a decent Super Bowl halftime show, though I feel like it was too short. I liked Kendrick and his whole mood, and I loved when SZA came and did “Luther” and “All the Stars.”
Lively students seemed to enjoy the show. “I really did like it, I thought Kendrick Lamar did super good but that might be biased because I was just having really fun with the music. I did also hear a lot of people did like it but I don’t know, I liked it,” said 7th grader James Grier. “I like it because the starting part where SZA came in and when Serina came in and started Crip walking. So yeah I liked it,” said 7th grader Acelee Joiner. “It was really interesting and the song(s) were cool,” said 6th grader Eaimen Parks.
Overall, the Halftime show was regarded with mixed emotions, though those I asked thought that the Halftime show was good.
