Do you love hanging out with family? Or going out with friends? Maybe going on your own to meet new people? Even if you don’t and enjoy lying around at home there is a game that works for everyone! Let me tell you about ‘Magic The Gathering’. I believe everyone can find something interesting about the game. It has strategy, luck, lore, art, board games, and many other things!
Recently Wizards Of The Coast (owners of Magic the Gathering) has released a new set of cards called the “Tarkir” set. It has brought many new fun to play cards mainly based around the card type dragon. For example here is a card called “Stormscale Scion”
To get you somewhat used to the function of a card I will explain how each card gets their own unique text, art, and color. Up in the top left is the name of the card, each card has its own unique name. To the right is its mana cost which usually includes whatever color the card is. Down to the right is something that’s only on the card type “creature”, it shows the creature’s power and toughness which is how much damage they can take and receive. Finally in the middle there’s the type and if applicable the sub-type. Every card has different text / ability and under that some of them have flavor text which would be written in italics. These flavor texts don’t affect the play of the game or function of the card but they can be interesting and add on to the lore.
Now that we know more about the new set and cards in it, let’s get some reviews from our criminal law teacher and Magic club leader, Mr. Horne!
Did you attend the pre-release event?
I did, I went to Bat City Games & Comics.
What were some of the pros and cons of your experience?
Some of the things i like are getting the pre-release box kit, it’s a cool experience opening them. I also get to play against people I’ve never met before so that’s definitely fun.
Do you think the new card mechanics were difficult to learn?
I don’t think that they’re too hard to learn, they’re pretty similar to other card mechanics before. I think that the hardest mechanic to learn now is playing with my favorite dragon Ugin, Eye of the Storms, because he has a lot of little techniques you could use
Do you think people would have a similar experience trying to learn the game?
Yes, I think that the commander decks that they have for the Tarkir set are really well balanced and powerful so it would be easy to learn with just one purchase.
If your magic club grew in attendance would there be a change in how you run it? What would you change?
I think it would change, if we had more people that were consistently coming I would love to start doing tournaments with commander and standard. I would include prizes, I’ve already started trying to get some prizes for the end of the year. In the last week I’m planning to have card packs for people to win.
Sounds like a very interesting experience, I wish I was able to make it to the pre-release. If anything has interested you or raised questions about the game I highly recommend going to the Magic the Gathering club at least one time, and maybe you’ll win some rewards.
