The movie begins with background music from the game itself. It starts off with Steve as a child with a pickaxe looking at the cave when you then see a very old man with a beard yelling at Steve to leave. During that scene however one of the popular quotes occurred, “As a child I yearned for the mines,” Jack Black as Steve said. He found a new motivation after his old boring job to go back to the mines. As he came back to that same mine the old man yelled and chased once again him out as he had done when Steve was younger. When they ran towards each other Steve juked the old man and went into the mines. Where he started to dig and found something unexpected, the Orb of dominance and the Earth crystal which when put together creates a portal to the over world.
This world is made entirely of cubes that resemble real world objects. Steve starts to build his own paradise, tames a wolf named Dennis Steve’s best friend and later Steve stumbles upon a ruined portal. In that scene there’s two very popular quotes, the first being, “flint and steel,” when Steve lights the ruined portal and once he is in the nether he says, “the nether.” During that scene we are introduced to the main villain, Malgosha, a gold obsessed piglin, ruler of the nether and who hates creativity. Both meet and Malgosha captures Steve before that Steve told Dennis to go back to the regular world, hide the Orb of Dominance in his room in the real world and to let it never be found.
The character was played by legendary actor Jason Mamoa who is called the, “Garbage man,” since he hoards many video game related objects and once was champion in a video game tournament. Garrett has failed to keep a video game store in Chuglass, Idaho though. He goes to a storage auction to acquire items to sell for money. Ultimately winning the contents of Steve’s old belongings hoping for an Atari Cosmos, those belongings include the orb and crystal.
Siblings Henry and Natalie move to Chuglass following their mother’s death. The two meet Dawn, their real estate agent who also runs a mobile petting zoo. On Henry’s first day at school he creates a jetpack but 2 bullies from his school cut a wire leading to the jetpack taking down the Chug Glass Potato Chip Factory mascot, which is where Natalie started working at. To avoid this he pays Garrett to pretend that he is his uncle, who takes him to his video game store. Where Henry discovers the orb and crystal that when they combine which ends up leading them to the same cave Steve had gone in. Natalie, Dawn, Garrett, and Henry all get sucked up into a portal that takes them to the over-world.
This is where they explore around, while at the same time a villager goes into the portal going into the real world after they teleport into the over-world. While they are in the over world Malgosha finds out the crystal and orb are now in the over-world. She sends Steve to go get the orb and crystal but instead Steve betrays her and he would go on to meet the squad a little later. When the group is exploring it quickly becomes night and then they are chased by spider jockeys and zombies. Henry discovers how to place blocks down and creates a dirt tower. During all this the earth crystal is broken. The zombies eventually get thrown and before they can get to the group Steve appears and the zombies are slain by the sun rising. Then he says one of the other famous quotes being, “I… am Steve.” Steve is informed that the crystal is broken and he tells that there is a replacement at the woodland mansion. To prepare for this quest they went to Steves village. Where they’re a lot of quotes.
The first one is, “Oh these guys, they’re the villagers,” and, “They love crushing a loaf.” But also there is a sweet tribute to a Youtuber who passed away from cancer in Technoblade. Henry asked, “Is he some kind of king?” in reference to the pig walking by with a crown and Steve responds with, “That’s a legend.” This was referencing Technoblade’s iconic pig skin with a crown.
Then Henry and Garrett go with Steve to, “Steve’s stash,” and Steve teaches them how to craft. While Malagosha sends an attack to the village to get the orb. Steve, Henry, and Garrett escape while Dawn and Natalie are separated in the village. Steve, Henry and Garrett go to the caves to get to the woodland mansion but in reality Garrett wants to take a route to get diamonds. But on their escape they encounter the big boss piglin.
When they make it to the woodland mansion Garrett and Steve distract the pillagers while Henry goes and tries to sneak to find it in the chest room. However right before he’s able to go upstairs some pillagers spot him and they chase him but eventually he makes it untouched. During that time the pilligers are getting bored. Then After some looking he finds the crystal. But he is meeted with an enderman which Henry looks right in the eyes. Then is meeted with all his friends talking about bad things about him. Then he snaps out of it and kills the enderman with a diamond axe. While this was happening Steve is tied up while watching Garrett fight a “Chicken Jockey,” which was the most popular quote in the whole movie. They fight and before Garrett gets KO’d Steves gets free and punches the zombie in a random hallway. Henry, Steve and Garrett meet up and run to a bridge.
There they are met with Malagosha and she takes the orb and crystal leaving them there. But then Henry and Steve leep onto a gasp ship leaving Garrett behind. Then the gasp crashes down knocking out Steve and Henry. They wake up in a mushroom house made by Dawn and Natalie. During this Malagosha opens a huge portal from the nether into the overworld using the power of the orb. They all come together making a plan to stop this.
They all have their items and they say, “Minecraft,” in unison after combining, “Mine,” and “craft.” They create a lot of iron golems and a super special fast blue one using the boots of swiftness from Steve’s stash instead of a pumpkin. This is the final battle, iron golems vs a huge hoard of piglins. Henry during the battle uses an ender pearl he found from the woodland mansion to grab the orb, bringing the day light back zombifying all the piglin’s, this includes Malgosha.
The party who survived, which includes Garrett who survived the explosion went back to Chuglass, where they developed the successful video game, “Block city Battle buddies.” Dawn opens a zoo with Dennis as the main attraction, Natalie starts a self-defense business. Henry completes his jetpack and Garrett and Steve become best buds and revitalizes, “their,” game store.
I really enjoyed this movie, I remembered when I was young wanting a Minecraft movie and this was awesome. I really liked the quotes like, “Chicken Jockey.” I really believe that Jack Black and Jason Mamoa did a FANTASTIC job. I really hope they make a 2nd movie. Now I asked some fellow miners their opinions on A Minecraft Movie and I got some nice responses. Fellow crafter 7th grader Henry Condon told me how he liked the movie and said, “I thought that it was actually really good.” I also asked if he likes any of the movie quotes and he said, “Chicken jockey.” (in a silly tone)
