The importance of ensuring teachers have the supplies they need for themselves and their students in their classroom goes beyond words. It is very time and money-consuming for teachers to spend their own money each year to buy school supplies, the average out-of-pocket money per year being $500 with estimates of the number bouncing past $800 this year. Seeing all of this —and knowing that most of the supplies will either get destroyed or lost by the first few months of school— makes you wonder how many times they have to re-order supplies just to replace them again.
Often, teachers send out wishlists in the hope that students and their families will be able to buy supplies for the classroom, as well as things for their personal use. With all these lists and different students with different teachers, a lot of time barely anything gets checked off of the teachers’ wishlists and they end up, once again, paying for everything themselves. This got the newspaper staff thinking, “What if we make a big list of everything the teachers want/need for this school year?” So, we sent out a survey and got the wishlists of many teachers to be posted around the school in hopes that students would help check off some items on their lists.
