The Nintendo Switch 2 releases on June 5th, 2025 and will have two separate bundles you can buy. With the new Nintendo Switch 2 console having a new larger 7.9-inch 1080p screen, and once connected to a TV it can display up to 4K resolution. Which comes as an improvement in comparison to the predecessor, with the new console supporting LCD displays. This also supports HDR, VRR, and up to 120 fps on certain games.
New features coming to the console include the new GameChat feature that works through a new button on the right Joy-Con 2. This new button has the letter, “C,” on it, which stands for the new Chat feature. The new feature resembles Discord in some people’s opinions. Another part of the new feature is the accessories you can use with it like the Nintendo Switch 2 camera which allows you to have a camera to go with the GameChat feature as an additional accessory that can be bought separately.
The new console has new joy-cons simply named the Joy-Con 2, this version is designed to attach and detach with ease for the new console redesign. Strong magnets keep the controllers attached to the system. The release button on the back of the joy-con, is what disengages the magnetic lock, and they come off.
Another new feature with the console is the mouse feature which allows you to use the Joy-Con 2’s to use as a mouse, which will be used for some games. This includes the new Metroid game coming in 2025 named Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. When using the Joy-Con 2 as a mouse it allows another way to shoot out the arm cannon, this will also be used for other games including Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV.
The Nintendo Switch 2’s dock has also been improved for better cooling, with a new design helping do so. An additional new feature that is coming to Switch 2 is a brand new built-in microphone that can pick up your voice, even when sitting far away and blocking out background noise. Although some students including 8th grader Cole Pogue-Jewell thought that some accessories seemed unnecessary, “I’m not getting the camera, seems fine though I guess.”
Nintendo had to deal with the tariffs here in the United States, which has caused some backlash. With the already increased price between the predecessor to the Switch 2 the tariffs placed on many nations by the US didn’t help. This would lead to being only placed on China with baseline reciprocal tariffs on all the countries that were originally tariffed also. This includes Vietnam which produces a lot of Nintendo products since the relocation of things being made there rather than China. Regarding the tariffs Wesley McCollum said, “I think it’s a big bummer, but I’m still probably going to buy the Switch 2.”
Some products had to have an increased price which led to luckily just accessories rather than the console itself. Some people aren’t letting the cost deter them from purchasing the console, but others are opposed to purchasing it. This doesn’t help though, as for example 8th grader Jaxson Peña thought, “It’s overpriced.” Which was even before Nintendo had raised accessory prices. While asking Cole what he thought of the tariffs’ impact he explained, “I’m aware about the situation with tariffs… people online are complaining too much about the price, which is funny since many have spent way more on a PS5 and other competitors cost wise.”
Students also thought, “I really liked the Switch, so I’m excited for the Switch 2,” said Wesley McCollum, Pogue-Jewell agreed but he added, “I think people online are just complaining too much.” McCollum also stated that, “(I’m) concerned that they didn’t actually eliminate Joy-Con Drift, so I’ll see about that,” which was in response to asking about any concerns.
In conclusion, students and those all around are interested or excited in the future of this upcoming console, and I hope you are too! For more information on all Nintendo products check out Nintendo.com.
