Well, it was a cat-tastrophe. Okay, not really, I just wanted to make that joke. If you know you know.
The Marvels, the MCUs’ (Marvel Cinematic Universe) most recent movie, came out November 10, 2023 and got fairly good reception. The sequel to Captain Marvel, a box office hit, the Marvels followed Carol Danvers (Or Captain Marvel), Kamala Khan (Or Ms. Marvel), and Monica Rambeau (Or Monica Rambeau) having to tie up some loose ends with Captain Marvel’s old home while figuring out how to handle their now intertwined powers.
If you’re hyper-obsessed with anything that is/ has been popular like me (think Taylor Swift, The Hunger Games, Marvel, etc) you’d know that Marvel has been in a bit of a rut recently. The MCU is getting too overcomplicated and the movies are starting to become a game of “make the characters progressively more OP and uninteresting”, or so I’ve heard. Because of this the marvel movies have gotten an all time low of viewers, and those who do still watch it don’t exactly hype it up.
But, surprisingly, “The Marvels” was quite well received. The Marvel Community, otherwise known as random people online, have come to a general consensus that although it’s not on the same level as some of the older Marvel classics it was still miles ahead of some of the more recent stuff. People have enjoyed seeing the relationships between Monica and Carol, the outstanding CGI, and most of all further character development for Captain Marvel. Overall, it’s a positive step in the right direction.
Finally, I’m sure you’re asking “But what do you think of the movie? Isn’t that the whole point of this article? Give us your opinion,”. And to that I say… It was good. Yep, quite an astute observation. In all honesty, my take isn’t the most fresh. I think that this movie fell into certain tropes, quirky relatable teen characters, repetitive final power scenes, etc., but there were glows, too. The relationships were fun to further look into, the plot helped advance the overall marvel universe without overcomplicating things, the CGI was great, and I also really liked the amount of cats.
In conclusion, character inconsistencies and minor nit-picky problems aside, The Marvels was a fun, feel good family movie that I would 100% recommend. As fun as it can be to start over-analyzing and over-criticizing sometimes we need to watch only to enjoy, and The Marvels is a great movie to do that with.
