With the election, people are getting increasingly anxious about who will win depending on their views, but how are the people who can’t vote or do anything about it feeling?
As we know, there are two main parties: Republicans (Donald Trump) and Democrats (Kamala Harris), but there are also the Green Party (Jill Stein), Libertarians (Chase Oliver), Constitution Party (Randall Terry), and the Natural Law Party (Robert F. Kennedy Jr) for people that didn’t like the main two.
The Democrats are worried about Trump’s views on the border and people’s rights as seen in my interviews with 7th grader Emmett Hollinsworth’s interview and 8th grader Izzy Reed’s interview.
If you could vote who would you vote for and why?
“I would vote for Kamala Harris because if we had a closed border many people would be torn apart from their families, and we could still have, like a functioning border that’s not blocking people away from like their ancestors and their families and we could still like, protect, like, the country by like, having, like, areas of like, check-ins to see if anyone is- but like a wall is unnecessary, because like, many people like, deserve to live- this is the ‘the land of the free’, and people are supposed to be free here and not have to be moved somewhere else because they are a different nationality,” said Hollinsworth.
“Um, Kamala Harris because she’s not a convicted felon, she also supports women’s rights, and um, she supports rights for everybody, and Trump is actively trying to take women’s rights away,” said Reed.
What do you like about Harris?
“Uh… I like, I like her, like… Initiative. I like her opinions, I like her beliefs,” said Hollinsworth.
“I think she supports my views as well like she wants to make sure everyone has rights and everybody can vote and stuff, yeah she’s just, the, the best option, in my opinion” said Reed.
What don’t you like about Trump?
“I don’t like his beliefs, and opinions about certain, or like, on how we should have a closed border… or like, in many interviews, he has said things about taxes and how he would probably increase taxes, so yeah,” said Hollinsworth.
“He’s a convicted felon. He also is, saying that women shouldn’t be able to get abortions and, my capstone is about abortion rights and proper sexual education so if he does take away women’s rights to get abortions, then, there will be a lot more orphans in the world and, cause some families just can’t take care of a child so they have to give it up, there will be lot less mothers if they try to attempt abortions themself, like unsafe ones. I think 200,000 women die of unsafe abortions every year, and that’s like, the whole world, not just the US,” said Reed.
Is there something you want Kamala to do better at or value more?
“I’d like Kamala to change the system, like change, or lower taxes, help people like, feel actually free, and, yeah,” said Hollinsworth.
“Umm, I would appreciate, you know, transgender rights, all the stuff, gay rights, all that stuff,” said Reed.
What will you do if Trump wins?
“I don’t know. I feel like I’d just hope for the best,” said Hollinsworth.
“Um… My parents said that we might move countries due to the fact a lot of my rights, my mom’s rights, everybody’s rights would be taken away, so we would most likely move countries, maybe New Zealand or somewhere… I don’t have a passport, that’s a problem,” said Reed.
Sadly, none of the Republican students we found wanted to be interviewed on the record.
However, two people I interviewed would have voted for a third party. 7th grader Thelo Crawford was one of them.
Who would you vote for and why?
“I would vote for the third party just because I believe both of them wouldn’t do anything to the genocide in Gaza,” said Crawford.
Which third party?
“Green Party, because that is what my pare- well my dad is voting for,” said Crawford.
“What do you like about the Green Party and do you know who is running?”
“Jill Stein… They’ve promised to like, lower the like, prices of gas and living… That’s pretty much it,” said Crawford.
